HOOK SANDS | SANDBANKS

OVERVIEW

Accessed from Sandbanks, Hook sands is an expansive sandbar which extends from Poole Harbour entrance for around 2km out.

It is generally always covered by water except for the strongest spring tides when the end section can become exposed for a couple of hours.

Going directly from the deep water channel to the sandbar ‘The hook’ creates a playgorund of waves which form up and roll across the bar as perfect ramps and rolling swell lines.

Popular for years amongst windsurfers, the Hook changes day to day to get it at its best riders should look for side shore conditions and mid/high tides with a strong well.

TIDES

RIDE-ABLE: ALL TIDES

Sandbanks and hook sands can be ridden in all tides, but it will react different to swell as it’s depth changes. Bigger swell hold better in higher tides, Low tides can crumble waves quickly unless the swell is small with a large period.

The tidal current can be strong here, flooding NW into the harbour and ebbing out to the SE.
